Flumazenil is used in the reversal of the sedative central effects of benzodiazepines. It’s employed in anesthesia and during intensive care. In anesthesia, it’s useful for the termination of benzodiazepine induced and maintained general anesthesia in inpatients. Reversal of benzodiazepine-induced sedation in brief procedures for both diagnosis and therapy in inpatients as well as outpatients is another indication. As a specific agent for the reversal of the central effects of benzodiazepine in drug overdoses, this could serve to restore the patient’s autonomous respiration and consciousness so as to make intubation unnecessary or to allow for extubation.
Flumazenil is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Flumazenil, benzodiazepines or any of the excipients, and in people who have used benzodiazepines in the treatment of a potentially life-threatening condition, such as increased intracranial pressure or status epilepticus.
The most common side effects include nausea and vomiting, during post-operative use, and especially if opiates were also used. Other side effects are palpitations, anxiety, and fear, that usually appear after a quick injection, and generally resolve on their own.
