Etoposide is used in the treatment of various types of cancer, including Kaposi’s sarcoma, Wilm’s tumor, Ewing’s sarcoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, neuroblastoma, mycosis fungoides, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, brain tumors, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and cancer of the bladder, lung, prostate, uterus, testicles, and stomach. Etoposide is a high-dose therapy used during bone marrow transplants.

Side effects

Common side effects of Etoposide occur in more than 30% of patients and can include hair loss, increased risk of infection due to low white blood cell count, increased risk of bleeding due to low platelet count, nausea and vomiting, chemo-induced menopause, and, if infused too quickly, low blood pressure. Etoposide may affect your fertility and ability to have children. If you are planning to have children, discuss this with your healthcare provider.

Less common side effects occur in 10-29% of patients taking Etoposide and can include poor appetite, mouth sores, diarrhea, and a severe skin reaction known as radiation recall.

Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and mouth sores are more likely to occur in individuals receiving high doses of Etoposide.


Do not used Etoposide if you have anemia, a severe infection, decreased bone marrow function, increased body acid, bleeding, lung fibrosis, interstitial pneumonitis, moderate to severe kidney impairment, drug-related Hepatitis, or decreased levels of neutrophils, white blood cells, albumin proteins, or platelets in the blood.

Do not use Etoposide if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
