Fluorouracil belongs to antimetabolites, a category of chemotherapy drugs. This group, antimetabolites, is akin to the usual molecules that we have in our body, except they are somewhat different structure.
What antimetabolites do, is help to halt cancer cells from working as they normally do. They interfere in the cell’s DNA making and repairing process. Cancer cells require an uncontrolled creation and repair of DNA so they can continue to grow and multiply without stopping.
Fluorouracil is also known by the names FU or 5FU and it’s one of the most frequently used drugs in several types of cancer, including: colon, anal, head and neck, breast, stomach, and some skin cancers.
Fluorouracil should not be used by patients who have a history of hypersensitivity to fluorouracil, who are seriously weakened or who have bone marrow depression secondary to radiotherapy or to other antineoplastic treatments, or who are diagnosed with a potentially severe infection. Flourouracil should not be used for treating non-cancerous or non-malignant diseases.
The most common side effects reported include myelosuppression, which include leucopenia, pancytopenia and thrombocytopenia, as well as agranulocytosis and anemia. Diarrhea, nausea and vomiting have been reported commonly during the course of therapy and may be managed symptomatically. Alopecia has been seen in an important number of patients, especially in female patients, but it’s reversible after stopping treatment. Malaise, weakness and changes in the ECG have also been reported.
