Evitol is used as a supplement in individuals with a diet that is rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids and to correct Vitamin E deficiency that is associated with cystic fibrosis, malabsorption disorders, abetalipoproteinemia, and chronic cholestasis. Evitol is also used to prevent retrolental fibroplasia and hemolytic anemia in premature infants with low birth-weight.
Side effects are rare, but occasionally occur with doses larger than 135mg per day. These side effects include fatigue, weakness, blurred vision, headache, dysfunction of the gonads, rash, creatinuria, decreased serum thyroxine and triiodothyronine, and increased serum creatine kinase, cholesterol, triglycerides, and urinary estrogens and androgens. With doses greater than a gram per day, abdominal pain and diarrhea may occur. Side effects will go away after discontinuation of Evitol.
Do not take Evitol if you are predisposed to thrombosis, as Evitol can increase this risk. Keep this in mind when treating women that are taking estrogen or oral contraceptives containing estrogen.
Monitor infants that weighed less than 1.5kg at birth that were treated with vitamin E, as these infants have a higher incidence of necrotizing enterocolitis.
