This medication is used in adults for the treatment of mild to moderate hypertension. It may be used alone or in combination with a group of antihypertensives known as thiazide diuretics and/or other drug groups when other agents have been ineffective or insufficient. The hypotensive effect of terazosin is more notorious on the diastolic pressure.
It’s also indicated in adult patients in the symptomatic treatment of urinary obstruction secondary to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Terazosin is a selective, post synaptic, alpha-1-adrenoceptor blocker. Antagonism of these alpha-1-receptors on the prostatic and urethral smooth muscle has been shown to improve urinary tract flow as well as relieve the urinary obstruction caused by BPH.
This medication should not be used by patients with a known hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients, a known sensitivity to any other alpha-adrenoceptor blockers, or a history of micturition syncope.
During the adjustment period, which occurs when taking Hytrin for the first time, or when starting a higher dose treatment, dizziness, light-headedness or fainting may occur. These side effects can also present themselves when standing up quickly from a lying or sitting position. If you are affected by these side effects, lying down until you feel better and sitting for a couple of minutes before standing again can prevent these effects from returning. These side effects usually disappear on their own, and should not happen again after you’ve adjusted to the medication.
The most commonly reported side effects of Hytrin are:
